Coins and notes

Since it’s divided similarly to the Australian dollar, Barbados currency is easy to understand.

Barbados coins are available in 1c, 5c, 10c, 25c and $1 pieces. Featuring 7 sides and a unique curved shape, the $1 coin is worth taking a closer look at.

Barbados notes currently in circulation include $2, $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100 denominations.

Facts about the currency

  • The BBD is fixed to the USD at a rate of 1USD = 1.98 BBD. This means it doesn’t fluctuate against the USD, and only changes based on a foreign currency’s fluctuation relative to the US dollar.
  • In 2002, a $5 note bearing the words “To commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Central Bank of Barbados” was introduced. Reportedly, only 1,000 notes were issued, and you had to be a bank employee to receive one.
  • In May 2013, the Central Bank of Barbados introduced redesigned banknotes for the first time in 40 years.
  • Tactile marks were added to the new notes to help people with low vision.
