About the currency

Coins and notes

Since 1963, the riyal has been divided into 100 halalas. Today’s coins in circulation are worth 1, 5, 10, 25 and 50 halalas, and 1 and 2 riyals. Notes range through 5, 10, 50, 100 and 500 riyals. And if you arrive back in Australia with any riyal left, any Travel Money Oz store can help you trade it back for the classic Aussie dollar.

Facts about the currency

  • Anything greater than SAR 60,000 (or the equivalent in other currencies) must be declared on entry to Saudi Arabia.
  • The riyal was introduced at the exact same time as the nation of Saudi Arabia itself.
  • The riyal is always worth 3.75 USD – they’ve been lovingly pegged to each other since 2007.
  • You might see some ‘qrish’ coins still in circulation, but they aren’t commonly used or found anymore.
