October 2026 marks Travel Money Group turning the big 20 (yes, we’re a Libra)! In business years that’s basically a hundred, and in travel years it’s roughly a lifetime.

Once upon a time…

It all began in 2006, when Flight Centre Travel Group acquired Nationwide Currency Services, a group of seven local currency exchange businesses. Fast-forward to 2011, we united them under one name, Travel Money Oz, and we’ve been helping Australians get more travel money in their wallets ever since. With travel in our DNA, expanding overseas was the natural next step. In 2014, we crossed the Tasman to join our mates at Travel Money NZ (they loved our all-black uniforms, btw), and a year later Travel Money Group was officially born, bringing both brands together under one family.

Since those humble beginnings, we’ve swapped millions of dollars into everything from baht to bucks. We’ve helped honeymooners, backpackers, business travellers and very stressed-out parents heading to Disneyland with four kids. Today, Travel Money Oz is Australia’s largest foreign exchange specialist, with 60+ currencies to buy and sell and reloadable prepaid travel money cards.

Then 2020 happened (yuck). Borders shut, flights stopped and nobody needed Japanese yen for their lounge room YouTube holiday. Sadly, in March that year, we had to close our doors. It wasn’t our finest moment, and we’d rather not do it again, thanks.

But travel came back, and so did we! In November 2021, we reopened, and the welcome from our customers was better than any exchange rate we’ve ever offered. Just last year, we celebrated reopening our 100th store across Australia and New Zealand. We literally went from 0 to 100.
