The official currency of Qatar is the Qatari Riyal (QAR), issued by the Qatar Central Bank and commonly abbreviated to "QR" or written in Arabic as ر.ق. One Riyal is divided into 100 dirhams, though in practice only the 25 and 50 dirham coins see much everyday use.

Qatar's currency has gone through a few changes on the way to becoming the Riyal we know today. Until 1966, Qatar used the Gulf Rupee, a special version of the Indian Rupee issued for use across the Gulf. When India devalued the rupee in 1966, Qatar briefly used the Saudi Riyal for around six months before Qatar and Dubai jointly introduced the Qatar and Dubai Riyal later that year. It wasn't until 19 May 1973, after Dubai joined the newly formed United Arab Emirates and adopted the UAE Dirham instead, that Qatar began issuing its own separate currency, the Qatari Riyal. The old Qatar and Dubai notes and the new Qatari Riyal notes circulated side by side for 90 days before the older notes were withdrawn.
