Explore Colombia – the Hidden Gem of the Earth

With your best hiking boots and some Colombian pesos, you’re ready for an adventure like no other through Latin America.

Colombia boasts some of the world’s most iconic (and exotic) culture.

To experience all of this, you’ll need some local pesos. The Colombian take on this currency is essential once you enter the country – you’ll often find that there are no locations to exchange the Aussie dollar once you arrive. If you happen to have US cash with you, be very cautious of trading within Colombia; there are some scammers who’ll do their best to rip you off. It’s best to either trust larger bureaus or banks over there, or plan ahead at home.

The team at your local Travel Money Oz can help turn your dollars into pesos and kick-start the best adventure you’ll ever go on.

Coins and notes

Ah pesos, they’re such a phenomenal currency to use. It’s as simple as it gets, no dollars or cents, just pesos.

Coins come in 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1,000 peso variations, then banknotes range up through 1,000, 2,000, 5,000, 10,000, 20,000 and 50,000 pesos.

Facts about the currency

  • If you use any sort of credit card in Colombia, you’ll be asked to show ID – at least you know your cash is relatively safe if your card is stolen.
  • ATMs have daily limits and are often known to run out of cash on weekends. So unless you love running out of cash (nobody does), it’s worth withdrawing throughout the week to stay ahead.
  • 2010 saw the launch of a 2,000 peso note with braille, the first of its kind in Colombia.
  • The peso has been the currency of Colombia since 1810, replacing the real.
