About the currency
Coins and notes
Ah pesos, they’re such a phenomenal currency to use. It’s as simple as it gets, no dollars or cents, just pesos.
Coins come in 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1,000 peso variations, then banknotes range up through 1,000, 2,000, 5,000, 10,000, 20,000 and 50,000 pesos.
Facts about the currency
- If you use any sort of credit card in Colombia, you’ll be asked to show ID – at least you know your cash is relatively safe if your card is stolen.
- ATMs have daily limits and are often known to run out of cash on weekends. So unless you love running out of cash (nobody does), it’s worth withdrawing throughout the week to stay ahead.
- 2010 saw the launch of a 2,000 peso note with braille, the first of its kind in Colombia.
- The peso has been the currency of Colombia since 1810, replacing the real.
