About the currency

Coins and notes

Kenya has plenty of ATMs, but it’s still important to keep a generous amount of cash tucked away in your wallet. The Kenyan shilling is divisible by 100 cents, and coins come in 5 shilling, 10 shilling and 20 shilling values. Kenyan banknotes are circulated in 50 shilling, 100 shilling, 200 shilling, 500 shilling and 1,000 shilling denominations.

Facts about the currency

  • There are no restrictions on importing or exporting local and foreign currency in Kenya, but for any amount over US$5,000 (or equivalent), you will be required to provide documentation that shows the source of the money and its purpose.
  • The Kenyan shilling replaced the East African shilling in 1966.
  • In 2016 it was announced that the appearance of Kenyan currency will undergo major modifications, making way for new-look notes and coins. Instead of displaying individuals, the new designs will feature native flora and fauna.
  • Kenyan currency has traditionally featured a portrait of the country’s first President, Mzee Jomo Kenyatta.
