About Papua New Guinea currency

For such a multi-lingual country, Papua New Guinea currency is relatively simple to understand. The Papua New Guinean kina is divided into 100 toea (so a toea is equivalent to a cent, and a kina is equivalent to a dollar). Coins come in 5c, 10c, 20c, 50c and $1 denominations. Papua New Guinean banknotes are circulated in $2, $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100 kina denominations.
Facts about PNG currency
- Introduced in 1975, the kina replaced the Australian dollar as Papua New Guinea’s currency.
- The term Kina comes from the Tolai area of Kuanua and refers to a precious pearl shell widely used in the area for buying and selling.
- There are currently no restrictions in place when entering Papua New Guinea with kina or other foreign currency. However, amounts exceeding PGK 20,000 or equivalent must be declared.
