All about Colombian currency

What is the currency of Colombia?

The official currency of Colombia is the Colombian Peso, abbreviated as COP and symbolised as $ (or COL$ to distinguish it from other dollar-sign currencies). One peso divides into 100 centavos, though centavos are no longer used in everyday transactions.

The Colombian Peso was first introduced in 1810 following independence from Spain, replacing the Spanish colonial real at a rate of 8 reales to 1 peso. It has been the country's official currency ever since, making it one of the oldest continuously used currencies in South America.

Because of the large denominations in use (the highest note is COP 100,000), prices in Colombia often run into the thousands and tens of thousands. This is normal. A quick way to orient yourself: divide COP prices by roughly 2,800 to get an approximate AUD equivalent at current rates.

Colombian notes and coins

  • Banknotes: COP 1,000, COP 2,000, COP 5,000, COP 10,000, COP 20,000, COP 50,000, COP 100,000
  • Coins: 50, 100, 200, 500, 1,000 pesos
  • Note: smaller coin denominations (5, 10, 20 pesos) technically exist but are rarely encountered in everyday use due to their negligible value.

Fun facts about Colombian banknotes

  • Nobel Prize-winning author Gabriel Garcia Marquez appears on the COP 50,000 note, one of Colombia's most iconic cultural figures and the author of One Hundred Years of Solitude.
  • The COP 50,000 note is unusual in that most of its design is displayed vertically rather than horizontally, making it one of the few banknotes in the world with this orientation.
  • The 2016 new series of Colombian banknotes features biodiversity themes on the reverses, showcasing Colombia's extraordinary natural heritage. The COP 100,000 note features the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta and former President Carlos Lleras Restrepo.
  • Colombia uses the $ symbol for its currency, which can be confusing for travellers. Prices written as "$50,000" in Colombia mean 50,000 Colombian Pesos, not US or Australian dollars.

Travel Money Trivia - Colombian edition

  • The Colombian Peso was introduced in 1810 following independence from Spain, replacing the Spanish colonial real. In 1871, Colombia adopted the gold standard, pegging the peso to the French franc at a rate of 1 peso to 5 francs.
  • The Banco de la Republica (Bank of the Republic), Colombia's central bank, was established in 1923 following recommendations from the "Kemmerer Mission," a team of American economic advisors invited by the Colombian government.
  • Colombia is one of the world's largest producers of emeralds, coffee, and cut flowers. These industries are significant contributors to the country's economy and influence the peso's value.
  • The word "peso" is shared across multiple Latin American currencies (including Mexico, Chile, Argentina, Cuba, and the Dominican Republic), all descended from the original Spanish colonial peso.
